Douro Vineyards

It was the first demarcated and regulated wine region in the world, in 1756. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage since 2001.

Nothing is random

Quinta da Foz

The Quinta da Foz consists of 22 ha, of old vines and olive trees, with an average age above 80 years old, planted in schist soils, with a maximum height of 250m in altitude.

To guarantee the best use of the land and the best sun exposure, the terraces of Quinta da Foz, with slopes that exceed 25% in some areas, were shaped, to implant the vines, in three different forms.

Over centuries of cultivation using traditional techniques, the Douro people have discovered unique ways of planting their vineyards, by making the rock surface arable. In turn, shale guarantees and controls the temperature, thus creating the unique microclimate of the Douro for the development of the vine and roots. The total production of the vineyards is classified as A, which means that the wines produced at Quinta da Foz are of high quality. More than 30 varieties are planted at Quinta da Foz, with the predominant grape varieties being Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. In winemaking, tradition is associated with innovation, using sophisticated techniques combined with walking on granite mills at a controlled temperature.

These are all the conditions, which combined together, make the great wines of Quinta da Foz.

The Past

A traditional winery since 1872.

Quinta da Foz was built by D. Luís Borges Beleza de Andrade between 1796 and 1810, but it was in 1872 that this property was founded by the Cálem family after its acquisition.

It was held by the Cálem family until the end of 2010.

The Present

One passion, two regions.

In 2014, Filipe Ferreira, a young winemaker from Dão region, sees the potential of this emblematic Douro winery, and the opportunity to produce great wines, marked by the natural characteristics of the Douro region, and by his experience of making the wines with complex profile from Dão region.

Since that time, his strategy has been to value the enormous potential of Quinta da Foz, and, at the same time, recover the prestige and notoriety of the brand, crossing skills that reinforces themselves: the freshness and modernity of a young team with the wisdom and tradition of people who live and work at Quinta da Foz since the time of the “Doctor”.

The Future

A project, great wines.

The assumed challenge is to position our wines as a quality reference in traditional viticulture, focused on the specific identity of each parcel of the Quinta da Foz terroir.

Team

Great team, great wines.

Everywhere, all over the world, is the People who make the difference. From viticulture to the harvest, taking care of the vines with your own hands, processing and creating lots, guaranteeing control and rigor, doing the right communication and achieve sales, allways valuing the prestige and notoriety of the brand.
Everybody is important.
It was in 1990, when my father bought a Farm in Dão region, that I fall in love with the beauty of the vineyards all aligned, as far as the eye could see, and I decided to become a winemaker. Growing up in a family with a strong visionary and innovative spirit, the only condition imposed by my father was to take an Engineer course and only after that of Oenology. We started producing our wines in Dão region in 2010, at Quinta do Covão, and I decided to took the terraced vineyards to the region on the slopes of Serra da Estrela. As a lover of the natural richness of Douro region wines and passionate about the complexity of the profile of Dão region wines, I tried to associate and cross knowledge to create great wines, even richer in the identity of the terroir. In 2014, there is an opportunity to invest in the Douro region. Quinta da Foz with all its potential, strengthened my passion for wines. This passion brings me many joys, but it involves many sacrifices. Every year investments are made to respond to the growing market, from the requalification of vineyards to the renovation of the barrels, to guarantee the quality of our wines. Each harvest is only possible thanks to the dedicated work of the teams. From work in the vineyards to be present at International Fairs, everyone is responsible for the constant growth of this project.
