The Quinta da Foz consists of 22 ha, of old vines and olive trees, with an average age above 80 years old, planted in schist soils, with a maximum height of 250m in altitude.
To guarantee the best use of the land and the best sun exposure, the terraces of Quinta da Foz, with slopes that exceed 25% in some areas, were shaped, to implant the vines, in three different forms.
Over centuries of cultivation using traditional techniques, the Douro people have discovered unique ways of planting their vineyards, by making the rock surface arable. In turn, shale guarantees and controls the temperature, thus creating the unique microclimate of the Douro for the development of the vine and roots. The total production of the vineyards is classified as A, which means that the wines produced at Quinta da Foz are of high quality. More than 30 varieties are planted at Quinta da Foz, with the predominant grape varieties being Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. In winemaking, tradition is associated with innovation, using sophisticated techniques combined with walking on granite mills at a controlled temperature.
These are all the conditions, which combined together, make the great wines of Quinta da Foz.
In 2014, Filipe Ferreira, a young winemaker from Dão region, sees the potential of this emblematic Douro winery, and the opportunity to produce great wines, marked by the natural characteristics of the Douro region, and by his experience of making the wines with complex profile from Dão region.
Since that time, his strategy has been to value the enormous potential of Quinta da Foz, and, at the same time, recover the prestige and notoriety of the brand, crossing skills that reinforces themselves: the freshness and modernity of a young team with the wisdom and tradition of people who live and work at Quinta da Foz since the time of the “Doctor”.
