In the middle of the mountainous enclave, between the massifs of Serra da Estrela and Açor, Serra do Caramulo and Buçaco, and Serra da Nave, which protect the vineyards of the sea air mass of the Atlantic and the harsh winds of Spain. Marked by the confluence of rivers, and the climate, rainy winters and dry, hot summers, the Dão is an exceptional territory, with granitic soils with some sandy notes, which guarantee slow and fresh maturation.

With unique edaphoclimatic conditions, this wine region creates different micro-terroirs that translate into great wines with a profile full of character and firmness, ruled by freshness and elegance. In 1908 it is officially established as the Dão Demarcated Region.

Quinta do Covão

Like so many Casas das Beiras, the main culture of Quinta do Covão started with fruit production. After the apple business, new challenges arose, and young Filipe Ferreira decided to change the direction of agricultural production, betting on the potential of the grapes. Under his direction, starting with the planting of new vineyards and the conversion of others, at the same time that he begins to introduce rigor and control in viticulture and winemaking,
and betting on the cultivation of terraced vineyards, Quinta do Covão decided to expand its production to the commercialization of wines with its own brand, “Quinta do Covão Wines”.

In Sandomil, close to the alluvial bed of the river Alva, inserted in the first blades of the front of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, Quinta do Covão represents the authentic mountain vineyard.

With 50 hectares, Quinta do Covão represents the perfect balance between landscape and vineyard. With its rows of vine integrated between extensive slopes of native vegetation and with its rich mountain relief each lot shows an identity unique, reflecting the wealth of the Region.

The agronomic and viticulture work seeks to respect the heterogeneity of the soils, highlighting the essence of the terroir and managing each plant differently, to ensure that the grapes express the identity of their origin, in addition to the Serra da Estrela structure as a witness of history.

Each harvest of Quinta do Covão wines is a faithful expression of the vineyard in which it was born and convey this combination perfect climate, soil, altitude and human labor.

Each wine seeks to be unique, it represents a strong concept, a belief, a tribute.

Quinta do Covão’s vineyards are the only ones in the Dão region cultivated in terraces, planted between 100 and 600 meters, their extreme altitude and climate mark their mark on the growth of the vineyard and constitute the identity of their wines.

On October 5, 1985, with the acquisition of Quinta do Covão, the dream of a Gomes Ferreira, Jorge, Maria das Dores, Lúcia and Filipe family came true: a dream for the will to perpetuate a brand in the nature of this place, and a passion for returning to the region of the ancestors and childhood of Maria das Dores. It was in São Gião, a neighboring village of Sandomil, that Maria das Dores watched her father passionately prepare the wine he produced.

Without ever resting on the conquests of life, they decided to invest in the land. They started by exploring apple trees, but the passion was wines.

With a university course and a training in oenology, the young Filipe Ferreira of the 2nd generation of this family, decided to follow his heritage and fascination with the land. Filipe, always preferred to feel the land and the air of the countryside, to be working in an office, in Porto, his hometown. From his father, he inherited the determination and the desire to always achieve excellence. Growing up in a family with a strong visionary and innovative spirit, he decides to break with tradition and takes the terraced vineyards to Dão. He calls “his girls” to the vineyards. Brilliant and dedicated, with his nose sharp. Worker, every year celebrates another achievement at the time of the harvest. Passionate, fighter, he conducts all his effort, dedication and perseverance to raise the quality of Portuguese wines.

Currently Filipe, is at the head of a young, hard-working team, who together are dedicated to producing the highest quality wines in the Dão region. At the same time that it has the responsibility to preserve and transmit the essential values that give identity to Quinta do Covão, to deliver to the 3rd generation of the family an even better brand than the one it received, so that they continue the passion to create a brand of excellence of wines.
In 2019, Lúcia, the older sister, signs a batch of wines for the first time, starting to take her first steps in the world of wines, and leaving its mark on this story of passion, which is only beginning …

All the success of this project is based on a family and generational perspective, which over the years has been decisive in more difficult decisions. Family values, and passion, extended to professional dynamics and contributed to creating a culture based on responsibility, work and excellence, which is reflected in this entire project, and in the most visible way in quality of our wines.

In this desire to create an excellent wine brand, all this work is not only done by the hands of Nature, it is also result of the effort, dedication, and passion in the soul of all who work in this company. And it is with great pride that everyone who works at Quinta do Covão is part of the team as a family.
